I’ve held off buying wireless/Bluetooth speakers because I’m not really impressed with them.  Their audio fidelity didn’t really wow me and they border on the expensive.  Besides, I’m not that  particular about listening to music on the go.

Recently I got the chance to use a Divoom Portable Wireless Stereo System, specifically the Onbeat-200.

It was released two years ago and I though to myself that this gray brick of a speaker system won’t compare to the current speakers that I have at home.  Due to its relatively nondescript appearance , I expected it to deliver tinny sound.  I was proven wrong.

Setting up the Onbeat 200 is relatively easy.  Just turn on the unit,  pair it with your smartphone or your bluetooth enabled device, and that’s it.  It’s ready to play.

And once I played my music, I was pleasantly surprised. I played Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve and it sounded great and borders on the awesome, for such a small device.

The controls on the Onbeat-200 is pretty straight forward. The volume control and pause buttons are pretty standard but you can also use it to move back or to the next song by holding the plus and negative buttons longer.

The bass on this thing is just awesome but don’t max out the volume as it sometimes drowns out the lyrics of the song. The  treble and midrange are decent. It’s great for rooms  in your home, your vehicle,  your yard or the patio or your favorite spot in the park.

What’s great about the Onbeat-200 is its speakerphone feature.  When it’s paired with your mobile phone, you can answer calls by pushing the pause button.  The voice on the other side was pretty clear. Ditto when it came to my voice on the caller’s phone. I tried this feature when I brought this during a roadtrip and it’s a great hands-free answering device.

Another great thing about the Divoom Onbeat-200?  It lasts more than 8 hours on a single 3 hour charge; that’s pretty good for a portable device.

Hooking this up  to my laptop didn’t work as expected but I’m still working on it.  I also don’t advise it for big parties or large outdoor areas or near pools or beaches. Because of its ruggedized rubber skin and wave speaker grill, someone might mistake it as waterproof or shockproof.  And of course, the sound won’t be enough to fill in a big area.

Still, I’m impressed with the Divoom Onbeat-200 Portable Wireless Stereo Speaker System.  I’m so impressed with it, that I might buy the newer models and I’m pretty sure they’ll sound as good or even better.
