We’ve heard about air conditioning units that can filter and make the air cleaner inside a room. Although it’s great and all, with the room cool and everything, it doesn’t stop mosquitoes from plaguing us with their itchy bites.

LG Electronics, a global technology innovator,  has once again come up with an Air conditioner that can fight humidity  but also  repel Mosquitoes.

You read that right. LG recently launched their Mosquito Away Residential Air Conditioner (RAC) that repels (not kill) mosquitoes, including  dengue-causing ones. Dengue, also known as breakbone fever,  is a serious illness and can be life threatening if left untreated.

The Mosquito Away RAC uses a speaker generating ultrasonic wave that makes inaudible u-wave at a specific frequency of over 30kH.  According to LG, this  ultrasonic wave technology is very convenient and probably the easiest away to keep mosquitoes away.

We’ve heard about  ultrasonic mosquito repellents before and actually used one, way back in the mid 1990s.  It emitted this specific frequency  that’s generated by male mosquitoes. It’s this frequency that drives away the blood sucking females from doing their dastardly deed (because just like real people, female mosquitoes can’t stand males) They were effective at a certain point but it didn’t repel all types of mosquitoes.

So LG did the next thing and tested it by utilizing professionals to validate their claim.
According to the tests of  Dr. Pio A. Javier, Research Professor of the Crop Protection Cluster of University of the Philippines, Los Baños, the LG RAC is capable of repelling indigenous mosquitoes, the dengue-causing Aedes aegypti, at a  success rate of 82.71 percent. Not bad. But we just wish it was 100% effective.

Aside from its Mosquito Away feature, the new LG RAC boasts of a low voltage starter that allows the unit to operate at lower voltage in lower temperatures. Its jet cooling feature, meanwhile allows for quick cooling.

Hopefully we get to review the LG RAC unit and put it through its paces.
