We’ve been searching the Interwebs for some great stuff for our Smart Homes Now Blog post today. This is one of them.
Last March, two students from George Mason University, developed a portable sonic fire extinguisher. That’s right. Instead of spewing out chemicals to put out fires, this one uses sound.
Sounds nuts right? Well it isn’t. Check out the clip below.
Viet Tran and Seth Robertson were working on a way to use high frequency sounds to put out fires. It didn’t work. “It’s low-frequency sounds — like the thump-thump bass in hip-hop that works,” Tran said.
“At some point you’ve felt the air coming out of speaker systems, especially when you’re playing music with a ton of bass,” Robertson said.
As you can see in the video, their sound-based fire extinguisher is portable enough for someone to carry one. There are some sound (pun intended) practical applications for this. You can use this particular invention in a kitchen above the stove. If in case fire bursts from cooking a dish, turn on the sonic fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
People are already thinking of mounting it on a big enough drone to put up building fires.
The one thing that you don’t have to worry about is the mess. No chemicals or residues from putting out the fire. No smell as well. We hope there’s a commercial version of this particular invention soon.
Tran sees them as viable options for putting out fires — in space.
Using a fire extinguisher in space would definitely be messy. Nothing to pull it down like good old earth gravity. If you’re an astronaut, you’d have that chemical gunk in your eyes and mouth.
Robertson said that a sonic fire extinguisher makes sense. You can direct sound waves without gravity.
