If you’ve built a house or you plan to do so then you know  that it’s not easy and it costs a ton of money.  It’s a pain to get a home constructed.  What if there’s an e-mailable house design that you can download and then built without ever using power tools?   That’s possible now.  Clemson University students built and designed the Indigo Pine, a  home that’s powered entirely by rooftop solar.

Check out the story here.

The Clemson University students created a structural system called Sim[PLY]. It make the building process easier to do.  They start off as digital files which are then sent to a facility with a CNC (computerized numerical control) machine. It’ll churn out more than 500 pieces of customized but standardized sheets of plywood into smaller interlocking pieces.

Once the plywood pieces are created, numbered, they are shipped to the building site. It can then be assembled like a 3D puzzle.

So how is it held together? Well, they created a tab-and-slot connection to lock together and carry the weight.  According to the creators, it only needs stainless steel bands to make the construction more stable and screws in the floor joists.  And it’s a full house with divisions and partitions in the Sim[PLY] designed home.

It’s only available in the US though but the idea of being able to build a house from e-mailable designs, constructed from plywood pieces and then built without using power tools. That’s just amazing. We hope to see an iteration of this design in the Philippines. A house built with plywood may not be as strong as concrete, but we’ll take it.
