We got more Internet of Things (Iot) news and this time it’s a doozy.

In the future, our connected appliances will talk and connect to the Internet through Smart Dust.

If it’s smart, that means that it’s no ordinary dust. These motes are not made up of dead skin cells but rather tiny computers. These are microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and can detect light, temperature, vibration, magnetism or more.

MEMS was once the province of science fiction and proof of concepts. Today, it’s real. Medium.com has this great story on how Michigan University researchers created a wireless mote. They subsist by using their built-inphotovoltaic cells to harvest heat and energy.

What are the possible applications for these MEMS? Aside from military applications, the researchers are looking at medicine and environmental monitoring.

So how will this benefit IoT adoption? How about having Smart Dust powering up your devices and at the same time providing wireless connectivity. Instead of clunky devices that connect to the Internet, your appliance will have this thin or miniature box to do it.

Instead of using your smartphone to call, you just tap on a micro device to call and receive calls from anywhere on the planet.

The possibilities are endless and let’s hope we all see it in our lifetime.
