Solid State Drives (SSD) are pretty much the next generation of drives. What’s great about them is that they don’t have moving parts. This makes them ore resistant to physical shocks, runs way quieter than a hard drive. They can run applications  faster.

But they’re quite expensive.   A 128 GB SSD costs  US$78+ (around P3,500) whereas a conventional portable hard drive at that price range is clocks in  1TB with a few bells and whistles.

But according to DRAMexChange, a division of research firm TrendForce,  the price of mainstream PC-client OEM SSDS have decreased steadily over the years. Soon, SSDs will be as cheap as hard drives.

According to DRAMeXchange, set against the previous quarter, the average contract price of mainstream PC-Client OEM SSDs has fallen by 10~11% in the fourth quarter. This marks the fourth straight time that the SSD price decline has exceeded 10%.

The DRAMexChange report also said that more and more PC users  are purchasing SSDs now because the price has become less prohibitive.   But it’s a different matter for notebook users. Notebook computer adoption has been less than stellar this year and TrendForce has has lowered the estimated adoption rate of SSDs by notebooks for this year to around 25~28%.

At Smart Homes Now! we use a couple of SSDs to run our more graphics intensive applications (video editing, video games).  Applications run faster and there’s less loading time. We could’ve got a few more but price kept us from purchasing more.

But here’s the good news. DRAMeXchange Senior Manager Alan Chen said in the report that  256GB SSDs will be moving close to price parity with mainstream HDDs in 2016. so the adoption of SSDs in the business notebook segment will rise. DRAMeXchange anticipates the next year’s SSD adoption rate in the notebook market will rise above 30% for the first time.

That means by next year, we’ll be seeing more people using SSDs. Count us in as well.
